COATING SELECTION GUIDE

Epoxy primers for industrial metal

Primer selection needs more than a product category. Start with the metal, its condition, the preparation method and the coating that will follow. These details help narrow the epoxy options for your industrial project.

High-build spray-applied primer options

PROTECT 365 TIX is a high-build epoxy primer used beneath compatible polyurethane, epoxy or acrylic finishes. Its H5960 STANDARD and FAST hardener options provide different working and curing schedules.

PROTECT 366 is an epoxy primer for industrial epoxy and polyurethane systems and uses the dedicated H5966 hardener. Both products have their own substrate preparation, mixing, film-build and overcoating instructions. Select the complete product-and-hardener combination.

When brush or roller application matters

EP PRIMER 310 is a two-component epoxy primer for steel, aluminium and galvanized steel. Its TDS includes brush, roller and spray application with method-specific thinning instructions. This makes it an option to investigate when access or the work arrangement calls for a method other than spraying.

Confirm the substrate preparation, EP HARD hardener, THIN 60 thinner and compatible finish before use. Chemical-resistance information in its TDS concerns intermittent splashes and sprays; it does not establish continuous chemical exposure.

Match preparation to the metal

Bare steel, galvanized steel, aluminium and an existing coating require separate assessment. Do not transfer a preparation instruction from one substrate to another. Identify contamination, corrosion, the condition of any old film and how the surface will be prepared.

For repair work, tell us which areas can be accessed and whether the existing coating can be identified. A small compatibility test may be part of the manufacturer’s instructions; it does not replace the full project specification.

Plan the next coating stage

Confirm the finish before ordering the primer. Pot life, application conditions and the interval before overcoating affect how a job can be organised. Check whether surface treatment is needed if the next stage is delayed.

Open the individual product page for technical documentation and component information. Ask about the current local SDS, package combination and availability for the project.

Bring these details to the discussion

  • Metal type and condition
  • Existing coating, if any
  • Preparation standard or available method
  • Brush, roller or spray equipment
  • Intended topcoat and working conditions
