COATING SELECTION GUIDE

Protective coatings for steel structures

A protective coating specification connects the steel preparation, each coating layer and the conditions the structure will face. Start with the project requirements, then select the products that fulfil the agreed system.

Define the exposure and project requirements

Tell us whether the structure is indoors or outdoors, where it will be installed and whether it encounters condensation, chemicals or other demanding conditions. If a specification already assigns a corrosivity category and durability requirement, include it with your enquiry.

Identify whether the work concerns new steel or maintenance of an existing coating. Access, preparation equipment and the application location can affect which system can be carried out correctly.

Manufacturer examples as a starting point

NOVOL publishes steel-structure examples combining PROTECT 365 TIX or PROTECT 366 epoxy primer with NOVOPUR 1020, 1050 or 1090 finishes. It also shows a multilayer route incorporating PROTECT 367 Zn zinc-rich epoxy primer and PROTECT 366.

These examples include defined steel preparation and layer build-up. Read the full manufacturer example alongside the individual technical sheets; confirm the current complete specification for your project before use. A product name alone does not establish the system’s performance.

Make the application schedule explicit

The working specification should name each product and component, substrate preparation, thickness of each dry layer, application method and the conditions for applying the next coat. Include how inaccessible details, edges, repairs and inspection will be handled.

Specify who will check the preparation and film thickness, how the results will be recorded and what happens if an application stage is delayed. Resolve any discrepancy between a system example and a product sheet with the manufacturer.

What a system example does and does not establish

A manufacturer’s example can guide product selection and technical discussion. It does not certify the applicator, approve a particular project or provide a guarantee of service life.

For immersion, chemical containment or another specialised exposure, request a specification covering that service. An example for the outside of steelwork or tanks should not be extended to an interior lining.

Bring these details to the discussion

  • Project drawings or description and location
  • New steel or existing coating condition
  • Exposure category and durability requirement, if specified
  • Available surface preparation and application method
  • Required finish, inspection criteria and programme
